An inside view of tooth extraction

Posted on 16 April 2010 by

Having a tooth taken out of your mouth is called a lot of things from torture to pulling teeth to exondontia or a unwanted dental job. Over time, what is commonly known as tooth extraction, occurs for a number of reasons and can be easy or difficult depending on the patient or tooth.

Tooth infections or decay, medical conditions, injury or broken teeth, and painful wisdom teeth are often sited to explain the need for the removal of natural teeth. When teeth are not looked after through brushing with toothpaste or are damaged by trauma, there is often no choice but to have the tooth pulled. So what is involved in the pulling or extraction?

Centuries ago, tools such as a dental pelican was used until the introduction of the dental key which was then replaced by forceps. The dental pelican is an antique claw device that looks like a pelican and is made out of metal. In contrast the dental key was designed like a door key made from metal with a wooden handle. Both these instruments did the trick, but could cause damage to the jaw in the process. Fortunately, Essex dentists have been involved in developing modern methods for extracting teeth.

Cosmetic dentists are trained to do teeth extraction and dental implants for the wellbeing of the patient. If you are losing a tooth, there is no need for fear of pelicans and keys, contact your local cosmetic dentist to discuss these safe and pain-free teeth removal procedures and how implants can help you feel your confident natural self.
